UK Denies Entry to Finnish MEP Sebastian Tynkkynen

The British government has barred a prominent anti-immigration Finnish politician from entering the country.

British authorities have blocked Finnish Member of the European Parliament Sebastian Tynkkynen from entering the United Kingdom. The Finns Party politician received a message hours before his scheduled flight stating his presence would not serve the public interest.

Tynkkynen was scheduled to speak at a right-wing conference in London on Thursday. He announced the unexpected entry ban in a video posted on the social media platform X.

The denial is directly linked to his controversial background and previous legal issues. Tynkkynen has been convicted three times in Finland for ethnic agitation and hate speech against minority groups.

This incident follows a similar entry ban imposed on Finnish Christian Democrat MP Päivi Räsänen just days earlier. Räsänen was denied travel authorization due to a recent Finnish Supreme Court conviction for inciting hatred against homosexuals.

The United Kingdom recently implemented an Electronic Travel Authorisation system for visitors from visa-exempt countries like Finland. This new system requires all applicants to explicitly disclose their criminal convictions prior to travel.

Tynkkynen described the British decision as a severe violation of freedom of speech. He directed his criticism at UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, claiming Britain is becoming the worst example of suppressing free expression.

In his social media posts, Tynkkynen expressed disbelief that political opinions could prevent entry into a European country. He noted the irony of being barred as an elected official while criticizing UK border policies for undocumented migrants.

“Rapists get into Britain, terrorists get into Britain, violent criminals get into Britain,” Tynkkynen wrote in Finnish. “But a Member of the European Parliament is denied entry because he is deemed to be ‘against the public interest’.”

British immigration authorities are increasingly restricting entry for foreign politicians with criminal records related to hate speech. Meanwhile, in Finland, these same politicians often defend their controversial statements as a standard exercise of free speech.

Who is Sebastian Tynkkynen?

37-year-old Sebastian Tynkkynen is a controversial Finnish politician and Finns Party member known for his hardline anti-immigration stance, multiple criminal convictions for ethnic agitation, and a record-breaking eight-hour filibuster in Parliament. His career has been marked by internal party conflicts, fluctuating leadership roles, and ongoing public scandals regarding racist behavior.

He is the only Finns Party representative elected to the European Parliament in 2024. Despite his strict anti-immigration stance, he is openly gay and has a partner from the African nation of Mozambique.

Tynkkynen grew up in Oulu and gained public attention in 2011 as a contestant on Big Brother. Before entering the public eye, he had enrolled at the University of Oulu to train as a classroom teacher, though he ultimately left the program without graduating.
