An 18-year-old Iranian student drowned on Friday evening while attending a Finnish language course at the West Finland College in Huittinen, reports Yle, Finland’s national broadcaster.
The incident occurred around 19:00 at an unmonitored river beach located on the college grounds.
A group of students had been spending their free time at the sauna when the teenager sank below the water’s surface.
College principal Sami Malinen indicated that the young man, who was born in 2008, was reportedly unable to swim.
Another teenage boy also went under the water during the incident but was successfully pulled to safety.
The rescued student was taken in for medical care and has since been discharged from the hospital.
Malinen told Yle that people at the scene attempted to save the victim and called emergency services immediately.
The principal described the event as a shock to everyone involved, especially the victim’s parents, his fellow students, and the college staff.
Crisis support was mobilized for the students right away, with additional gatherings organized over the weekend and on Monday.

No crime suspected
The police are currently investigating the events but do not suspect any criminal activity.
Sauna bathing and open-water swimming are deeply embedded in Finnish summer culture and are activities frequently introduced to international students.
However, these traditions present significant dangers for foreign professionals and immigrants who may lack swimming skills or experience with natural bodies of water.
The vast majority of natural swimming spots in Finland do not employ lifeguards, placing full responsibility for water safety on the individual.
While the principal noted that the river in Huittinen does not typically have a strong current during the summer, unmonitored waters often feature sudden drop-offs or unpredictable conditions.
The language course was organized by a partner organization utilizing the college facilities and is scheduled to conclude late next week.
