Admissions Blunder at Haaga-Helia: 46 Students Told They Were Accepted by Mistake

Messages intended for successfully admitted students were accidentally sent to the wrong email addresses.

Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences mistakenly sent acceptance letters to 46 student applicants on Thursday. The applicants had applied for the Business Technologies program during the spring joint application period but had not actually secured a study place.

Finland uses a centralized national portal called Studyinfo to manage higher education applications across the country. The centralized system makes the spring joint application period a highly anticipated time for thousands of domestic and international students seeking higher education.

The mistake was caused by an internal email distribution error rather than a flaw in the admission decisions themselves. Messages intended for successfully admitted students were accidentally sent to the wrong email addresses.

Haaga-Helia is one of the largest universities of applied sciences in Finland. The institution said that the official admission results in the national Studyinfo portal remained accurate at all times.

The university stated that no personal data was compromised in the incorrect emails.

The mistake was caused by an internal email distribution error rather than a flaw in the admission decisions themselves.

“A human error occurred, for which we are sincerely sorry,” said Saija Sokka, Haaga-Helia’s Director of Student Affairs, in a press statement.

Sokka noted that the university noticed the mistake immediately and personally contacted everyone who received the incorrect information.
