Asylum Seeker Sentenced to 3.5 Years for Rape of Paralyzed Woman in Finland

A Finnish appeals court has sentenced an Iraqi care assistant to three and a half years in prison for raping a partially paralyzed woman in the city of Vantaa.

Fahad Firas Adday Al-Nuaimi committed the crime in the summer of 2022.

The assault occurred just days after he started working as the victim’s home care assistant.

The local district court initially sentenced him to three years in prison.

Al-Nuaimi appealed the decision to the Court of Appeal, a standard legal step in the Finnish justice system.

On June 29, the higher court rejected his appeal and instead increased his sentence by six months.

The judges ruled that the act was particularly cruel and humiliating due to the victim’s vulnerable health condition and physical limitations.

According to the victim, the man raped her shortly after he began working as an assistant.

Quoting the victim’s court testimonial, Helsingin Sanomat reported that the man had waited for another employee who was at the victim’s home to leave. After that, the man had roughly turned the victim onto her stomach in her bed and raped her painfully.

The victim was unable to resist because one side of her body is paralyzed. She sustained bruises on her legs.

The man had asked the victim when she had last had sex and justified his actions by saying that she had been alone for so long.

The judgment is not final.

Al-Nuaimi claimed the encounter to be consensual

During the trial, Al-Nuaimi claimed the encounter was consensual. He stated that the victim had willingly answered her door naked.

The court dismissed this defense as entirely implausible given the extent of the victim’s partial paralysis.

The perpetrator first became known to the Finnish public during the height of the European migrant crisis in 2015. That year, Finland received over 32,000 asylum applications.

During a widely publicized meeting, Al-Nuaimi spoke with then-Prime Minister Juha Sipilä and claimed to be an unaccompanied minor.

It was later discovered that he was actually 19 years old at the time.

In the Finnish immigration system, underage asylum seekers are granted easier access to specialized housing and welfare services than adult applicants.
