Tampere Mother Fined After Leaving Young Children Alone to Visit Bar

A local court in Finland has convicted a woman of child abandonment. She had been drinking alcohol at home on a Tuesday evening before heading to a local restaurant.

A 32-year-old woman in Tampere has been convicted of child abandonment after leaving her three young children home alone to visit a bar. The Pirkanmaa District Court issued its ruling following an incident in November 2025.

The woman consumed alcohol at home on a Tuesday evening before heading to a local restaurant. She left her three children, aged three, five, and eleven, unattended for several hours.

Police were alerted to the situation later that night by the woman’s companion during an unrelated police intervention. Officers subsequently located the mother on the street in a state of severe intoxication.

Police escorted the woman back to her apartment, where the children were sleeping. Because the mother was too intoxicated to care for her children, they were taken into the care of emergency social services.

In Finland, municipal social and crisis emergency services operate around the clock. They have the legal authority to take immediate emergency custody of minors if their health, safety, or development is deemed at immediate risk.

Police escorted the woman back to her apartment, where the children were sleeping.

Mother pleaded guilty

The mother confessed to the charges in court, confirming the prosecutor’s account of the events. The Pirkanmaa District Court ruled her actions reprehensible but noted that the children did not suffer concrete physical harm.

The court sentenced the woman to 30 day-fines, which totaled 180 euros. Finland utilizes an income-linked day-fine system for many offenses, meaning financial penalties are calculated proportionally to the offender’s daily net earnings.

A fine of 180 euros for 30 day-fines indicates that the individual has a relatively low income level.

Additionally, the court ordered the woman to pay 650 euros, plus delay interest, to each of her three children for the distress caused by the abandonment.

The court’s judgment is now final.
