Vandalism and Theft Reported at Ravintola Chautari, a Local Nepalese Restaurant in Helsinki

A popular Nepalese restaurant in Helsinki, Ravintola Chautari, was vandalized and burglarized late Tuesday night. Thieves broke the front glass door of Ravintola Chautari on June 30 to steal cash, electronics, and alcohol.

Police notified the restaurant owner around 11:15 PM about the incident.

Owner Bishnu Aryal told the Helsinki-based Nepali-language publication Nepalilainen that he arrived within 15 minutes to find the front entrance shattered.

The perpetrators stole cash from the cash register, a laptop, two mobile phones, and an Apple Watch. They also took a JBL speaker and several boxes of wine and whiskey.

Aryal estimates the total financial loss at 4,000 to 5,000 euros, though a final calculation is pending.

Police are currently investigating the crime scene and reviewing security camera footage.

The incident has exposed a common administrative hurdle for entrepreneurs in Finland regarding commercial property insurance.

Aryal reported confusion over who is responsible for replacing the main exterior glass.

“The building owner claims the restaurant’s insurance should cover the damage, while the insurance provider argues it is the building owner’s responsibility,” says Aryal.

Immigrant-owned restaurants are a crucial and growing part of the Helsinki local economy.

While Finland generally boasts low crime rates compared to the rest of Europe, urban property crimes like this raise safety concerns among foreign business owners.

There is no confirmation, however, that Ravintola Chautari was targeted specifically because it is an immigrant-owned business.

Aryal stated that while the financial damage is significant, the incident also takes a mental toll on honest, tax-paying entrepreneurs.

He noted that such events make business owners feel the need for increased security measures in their daily operations.

Despite the damage and ongoing insurance disputes, Ravintola Chautari had its glass temporarily repaired by 1:00 AM that same night.

The restaurant continues to operate regularly and serve its customers.
