Protesters rally outside Google’s Helsinki office over forest clearings

In a statement, the organizers expressed concern that data centers threaten local environments, accelerate nature loss, and drive up electricity costs for future generations.

Around two hundred people gathered on Arkadiankatu in Helsinki on Monday afternoon to protest Google’s recent forest clearings for data center projects.

Organized by the youth environmental organization Luontoliitto, the demonstration featured participants holding signs criticizing data center expansion and its impact on water resources and local ecosystems.

Police officers monitored the protest, which took place outside the company’s local office in rainy weather.

The protest follows recent controversies surrounding large-scale logging operations carried out by Google at data center construction sites in Muhos and Kajaani.

Under Finnish legislation, an environmental impact assessment is legally required if wood is permanently removed from a contiguous area exceeding 200 hectares.

Environmental groups suspect that these recent clearings may have bypassed these statutory requirements.

In a statement, the organizers expressed concern that data centers threaten local environments, accelerate nature loss, and drive up electricity costs for future generations.

Organizers also emphasized that the protest was intended to remain a safe environment free from extremist groups.

Finland has increasingly attracted major technology investments due to its cool climate and renewable energy resources.

However, the rapid influx of energy-intensive data centers has sparked ongoing debates over land use, environmental protection, and regulatory oversight.
