Pauli ‘Pate’ Mustajärvi, one of Finland’s most popular and influential rock singers, has died at the age of 69.
He died yesterday, Friday, December 26, in his hometown of Tampere.
Mustajärvi’s death was announced through his official Instagram account.
He was diagnosed with cancer (tumor) last October, due to which he had canceled all his musical events.
A long and successful musical journey
Mustajärvi was born in Tampere in 1956. He began his musical journey in 1977 by founding the rock band Popeda.
Mustajärvi was known for his distinctive husky voice and energetic stage performances.
He is considered the leading exponent of the Manserock genre, which originated in Tampere.
His songs, such as Ukkometso and Mä elän vieläkin, are very popular in Finland. These songs are widely played in Finland, especially in bars and festivals.
With his passing, Finland has lost a shining star in its musical sky.
Mustajärvi left the band Popeda in 2023 to pursue a solo career. He had planned a special tour in 2026 to mark his 70th birthday.
His biography/memoir was scheduled to be published in June 2026. In the book, he reportedly wrote about his musical life and recent health struggles.
With his passing, Finland has lost a shining star in its musical sky.
