The Helsinki district court has sentenced a 40-year-old man to more than five years in prison for the aggravated rape and home invasion of a 77-year-old woman, according to Helsingin Sanomat.
The crime occurred in November 2025 when the attacker and an accomplice forced their way into the victim’s apartment.
The primary suspect, Kusay Wisam Muatamad Ahmad Al-Moddaris, was sentenced to five years and three months in prison. He was convicted of aggravated home invasion, aggravated rape, and theft.
The victim knew Al-Moddaris before the attack. According to court documents cited by Helsingin Sanomat, she had previously allowed him into her home to charge his phone, use the restroom, and sleep on her couch.
On the night of the incident, the men rang the woman’s doorbell and pushed inside when she opened the door. They remained in the apartment overnight and consumed the designer drug alpha-PVP.
The primary attacker forced the woman to undress and lie on a mattress moved to the floor. He then raped her multiple times in various ways while she verbally refused his advances.
The men were discovered the next day by a home care worker conducting a routine health check. The worker found the distressed victim still lying naked on a bloody mattress and immediately called the police.
Due to her memory illness, the victim had difficulty speaking and could not recall specific details later. However, she clearly told the police that she had denied the man’s advances.
During the trial, Al-Moddaris claimed the sexual acts were consensual and initiated by the victim. However, the court rejected his explanation.
He was ordered to pay the victim 15,500 euros in personal compensation. He and his accomplice must also pay a joint compensation of 2,000 euros.
The 27-year-old accomplice received a five-month suspended sentence for aggravated home invasion. His charges of aggravated rape and theft were dismissed.
The ruling is not yet legally final and can be appealed.
Due to her memory illness, the victim had difficulty speaking and could not recall specific details later.
Drug use linked to serious crimes
The synthetic stimulant alpha-PVP represents a growing safety concern in Helsinki. According to the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare, the use of this designer drug, locally known as peukku, has surged in the Helsinki metropolitan area in recent years.
Finnish police warn that alpha-PVP is highly addictive and more toxic than traditional amphetamines. Regular use frequently causes severe side effects, including paranoia, confusion, and highly unpredictable violent behavior.
This surge in dangerous drug use has contributed to a rise in unpredictable public disturbances and violent crimes across Helsinki. It has forced local authorities to increase police surveillance in affected neighborhoods to protect vulnerable residents.
