US and Denmark Reach Perpetual Military Agreement on Greenland

The indefinite deal expands American military presence in the Arctic and blocks rival nations from accessing critical Greenlandic resources.

The United States and Denmark have reached a sweeping defense agreement that allows the US to expand its military footprint in Greenland.

The deal ensures Greenland remains under Danish control while securing American strategic interests in the rapidly changing Arctic region.

US President Donald Trump first announced the agreement on social media last night.

Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen quickly confirmed the news through a joint statement.

The agreement guarantees the territorial integrity of the Danish kingdom and the self-determination of Greenland’s population.

It formally ends previous diplomatic friction caused by Trump’s earlier demands to annex the island.

Under the new terms, the US gains the right to establish new military bases across Greenland.

Under the new terms, the US gains the right to establish new military bases across Greenland. The exact locations and timelines for these facilities have not yet been disclosed.

Trump stated that the US will immediately begin the process of bringing a military presence to specific areas of the island.

The US currently maintains a small presence of just over 100 soldiers at the Pituffik military base, originally established during the Cold War as a critical early warning radar site.

The deal also includes strict security clauses aimed at strategic competitors. Rival nations are now barred from building military installations in Greenland without explicit American permission.

In practice, Denmark’s membership in the NATO alliance already restricted adversaries from establishing military outposts on the island. However, the new agreement goes further by blocking unapproved foreign investments in sensitive sectors.

This economic restriction primarily targets the mining of rare earth metals.

Both China and Russia have shown increasing interest in the Arctic region as melting sea ice opens new shipping routes and access to valuable natural resources.

The defense pact is valid indefinitely and has no planned expiration date. Trump described the arrangement as an eternity agreement.

Representatives from the US, Denmark, and Greenland will officially sign the document next week at the United Nations General Assembly.

The agreement will then proceed to the Danish parliament for formal processing.
